Six sheep have been killed and a further 20 injured in what police described as a “reckless” dog attack in Derbyshire.
Derbyshire Local Crime Team said four sheep were completely killed and two more had to be put down due to serious injuries following the incident in a field off Sporton Lane in south Normanton.
Officers confirmed that a further 20 sheep were left injured.
The animal was discovered around 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, February 8th. Police believe the incident involving the loose dog happened shortly before the sheep, as it was still warm to the touch.
Dog attacks on livestock, commonly known as sheep worries, can cause severe welfare damage to farmers as well as significant economic losses.
A Rural Crime Team spokesperson said the incident had caused “significant emotional and financial harm” and caused “extreme suffering to the animal”.
Police have warned dog walkers to keep their pets on a leash and keep them under close control in rural areas.
Officers added that those responsible may face prosecution and appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact Derbyshire Police.
