US startup Anthropic announced on Wednesday that it plans to open an office in India next year, as global generative AI companies seek to expand into the world’s most populous country.
Demand for AI tools and solutions is rapidly increasing in India due to increased adoption by both businesses and individuals, with the number of internet users expected to exceed 900 million by the end of the year.
Anthropic said India ranks “second in the world in consumer usage” of its chatbot Claude, adding that its planned office in tech hub Bengaluru will support the country’s “rapidly growing AI ecosystem.”
“India is attractive because of the scale of its technological talent and the Indian government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just a few concentrated areas,” CEO Dario Amodei, who is visiting India this week, said in a statement.
Anthropic’s move follows a flurry of announcements by other top AI companies aiming to court Indian users.
OpenAI has announced it will open an office in India later this year, and company president Sam Altman noted that usage of ChatGPT in the country has quadrupled in the past year.
In August, the company launched a monthly subscription plan of 399 rupees ($4.50) targeting students and young developers.
Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, told X that making the service “more affordable” was a “key request” from users.
AI company Perplexity also announced a major partnership with Indian telecom giant Airtel in July, offering a free one-year Perplexity Pro subscription to its 360 million customers.
Anthropic is valued at $183 billion, while OpenAI’s valuation will reportedly soar to $500 billion after the private equity sale, making it the world’s most valuable startup.
