Detroit — ford motor We are partnering with Amazon The move is to allow automakers’ franchised dealers to sell certified used cars through the online retail giant.

The new program will allow customers to secure financing, start the paperwork and schedule a time to pick up their vehicle at a participating Ford dealership, the companies announced Monday. Some steps, such as the final signature, may still need to be completed in person, Ford said.

The partnership comes two years after Amazon announced it would allow auto dealers to sell cars through its site, starting with cars from South Korean automaker Hyundai.

However, in Hyundai’s case, Amazon’s deal with the two automakers is different because it involves new cars rather than certified used cars. Although CPO vehicles are used, they have been inspected, maintained, and certified by the manufacturer or dealer. These are considered better quality used cars than unspecified cars and come with the same warranty as new cars.

Amazon also partnered with car rental companies earlier this year. hertz Sell used cars through the site.

How Amazon and Hertz's partnership threatens dealers

Ford announced Monday that more than 160 of the approximately 2,900 U.S. retailers have “raised their hands” to begin the process of partnering with Amazon. The company says about 12 companies have been fully onboarded and launched so far, and about 10 more are expected to launch next week.

“The addition of Ford Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles to Amazon Auto marks an exciting expansion for our store, giving customers access to thousands of high-quality vehicles backed by Ford’s comprehensive inspection and warranty program,” said Fan Jing, global leader of Amazon Auto, in a release.

Ford announced it will offer a 14-day or 1,000-mile money-back guarantee on vehicles sold through its partnership with Amazon, whichever comes first. The automaker also plans to offer vehicles in three CPO certification levels with different warranty coverages.

Ford says CPO vehicles are currently available at Amazon Auto in Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas, with plans to expand to additional cities in the coming months.

Because Amazon has partnerships with Hyundai and Ford, franchise dealers are still the final seller. Traditional automakers have a complicated relationship with their dealers, backed by laws in many states that make it difficult or illegal to bypass franchised dealers and sell new cars directly to consumers.

Laws regarding used car sales are not very strict, making it easier for companies such as: CarvanaHertz and others sell used cars and trucks online directly to consumers.
