A young veterinarian from a Cheshire farm has won one of Holstein UK’s most prestigious awards, with Jody Knutsford announced as the 2025 President’s Medal winner.
The award was announced at the CEMEX International Dairy Conference during the Burns Supper, with Holstein UK Managing Director Mark Logan revealing the results.
Mr Knutsford, who grew up on a family dairy farm in Cheshire, has been involved with Holsteins and Holstein Young Breeders (HYB) since the age of four.
She was awarded the President’s Medal and the Sue Cope Memorial Trophy. The prize also includes a trip to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto later this year, supported by HYB’s major sponsor Semex UK.
The judging panel comprised Mr Logan, CIS Field Services Director Janet Massey and Semex UK representative Roger Mather.
Three finalists were shortlisted. Samuel Brace, 27, of Lancashire HYB. Lauren Gilbert, 27, from HYB, Northern Ireland. and Knutsford (25) of Western HYB.
Candidates were nominated by their clubs detailing their contribution to the Holstein breed, HYB and the wider dairy industry. They also submitted an essay entitled Data-driven decision-making on farms leads to increased productivity, improved animal welfare, increased sustainability and increased profitability.
Logan said the criteria makes the final decision difficult. “I am honored to be involved in judging the Presidential Medal,” he said.
He added: “I would venture to say that just like judging a good class of dairy cows, we were looking for the perfect overall balance and I think we found that in Jody.”
Mr Logan highlighted Ms Knutsford’s “knowledge of the Holstein breed”, her work “as a farm veterinarian” and her support for young members, saying these qualities made her “an extremely suitable recipient of this prestigious award”.
National HYB co-ordinator Lizzie Yates said the finals weekend provided a valuable opportunity for all three candidates. “It was a great opportunity for the three finalists to attend the CEMEX International Dairy Conference and learn from a diverse range of respected industry voices,” she said.
Ms Knutsford qualified as a veterinarian in 2024 and joined Nantwich Farm Vets, working with dairy customers across Cheshire. Alongside her professional role, she remains closely involved with her family flock and show team.
She has competed in the All Breed All Britain Calf Show over the years, participated in several HYB weekend rallies and this year represented Holstein Great Britain at the Young Breeders School in Belgium.
Within Western HYB, she also mentors younger members, helping them develop showmanship, stock judging and clipping skills, and gain confidence in the show ring.
Ms Knutsford is likely to continue to be a familiar figure within the Holstein community, as her veterinary career develops alongside her continued involvement in breeding and youth activities.
