Following his firing as a federal prosecutor, Mohren Comey called on his colleagues to condemn “power abuse.”
Mauren Comey, the daughter of former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director James Comey, blamed President Donald Trump shortly after being fired from his role as a federal prosecutor in the United States.
In a memo to a colleague obtained by the Associated Press on Thursday, Comey wrote, “If a career prosecutor could be fired for no reason, fear could permeate the decisions of those who remain.”
“Don’t let that happen,” she said. “Fear is a tyrant’s tool and acts to restrain independent thinking.”
The memo came the day after Comey was let go of her role from her role as the Department of Justice’s New York US Attorney Assistant.
The Trump administration has yet to provide a reason for Comey’s firing. However, her position has long been seen as vulnerable due to her relationship with her father, who oversaw an investigation into alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia in the 2016 presidential election.
Elder Comey was fired by Trump early in his first term, but the former FBI director continues to be the subject of the president’s rage.
In Congressional testimony and a 2018 book, James Comey denounced Trump’s “unethical” and mafia-like approach to leadership. He also argued that Trump’s decision to fire him was an effort to undermine Russian investigations.
Since taking office in his second term, Trump and his allies have tried to purge Justice Department employees involved in cases of his opposition.
They include prosecutors who worked on the prosecution of special advisor Jack Smith as they pursued two federal criminal charges against Trump. One is to withhold documents classified during his tenure, and the other is to destroy the 2020 election.
Both lawsuits were dropped when Trump was re-elected in November 2024. It opposes the Justice Department’s policy of prosecuting sitting presidents.
The Associated Press reported earlier this month that more career prosecutors and support staff involved in Smith’s indictment had finished their jobs.
Critics argue that the Trump administration’s decision to fire such employees has eroded the Department of Justice’s independence. Many also point out that career civil servants do not choose to file their lawsuits and instead serve even when the presidential administration is in office, regardless of politics.
In a message to her colleagues, Mohren Comey urged her prosecutors to fight their current plight more diligently for a fair and impartial rule of law.
“Instead of fear,” she wrote.
“The fire of justice digging against the abuse of power. A commitment to seek justice for the victims. Above all, a commitment to the truth.”
Veteran Lawyer
Before her firing, Molen Comey was a veteran lawyer for the Southern District of New York and was often considered one of the nation’s top prosecutors’ offices.
She recently indicted Sean “Diddy” Combs. This is when a music producer pleads guilty to transport for intent to prostitution, but is acquitted of conspiracy and sex trafficking.
She previously worked on the success of Gislaine Maxwell’s prosecutor on charges of sex trafficking in connection with the sexual abuse of a minor girl by financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The fire comes as Attorney General Pam Bondy faces criticism from Trump’s Make America Great (MAGA) base in order to not release more evidence related to Epstein, including full accounting for his “client list.”
Epstein died of suicide in 2019 at the Manhattan Detention Center.
Several influential right-wing internet personalities, including Laura Loomer, have attacked Bondi and are seeking to fire Comey.
Additionally, US media reports that the Trump administration is currently investigating James Comey and former Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Brennan about an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
At the time, the US intelligence news community concluded that Russia was trying to interfere in the election, but there was not enough evidence to support the allegations that Trump’s campaign was trying to conspire with Russian agents.
Details of the reported probes to Comey and Brennan have not been revealed.
