ABB Capacity System 800XA Distributed Control System interfaces with synchronous capacitors to provide plant monitoring and supervision.

July 22, 2025 – ABB was awarded a large order from BP as the operator of Sangar Al terminal in Azerbaijan to support the stability of the electrification and power grids of one of the world’s largest oil and gas terminals. Connecting to the country’s national grid allows for electrification of the site, covering areas equivalent to over 688 hectares or over 800 soccer pitches.
Delivered as part of a five-year global framework agreement signed with terminal operators in September 2024, ABB will provide and integrate four synchronous capacitors based on site-specific designs to enable the removal of existing gas turbines.
ABB’s integrated solution reduces the number of synchronous capacitors required for the terminal, significantly reducing project costs. The ABB Capacity System 800XA Distributed Control System (DCS) is deployed to interface with synchronous capacitors to provide plant operator monitoring and supervision.
ABB’s synchronous capacitors take minimal footprints to ensure efficient and reliable operation of the power grid and electrical network. Synchronous capacitors designed to support power grids with short-circuit power, inertia and reactive power play an increasingly important role in grid stability as more renewable energy is integrated.
Azerbaijan’s national grid has achieved its climate target of consolidating low-carbon energy sources to increase renewable capacity to 30% by 2030 and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
With its contract scope leading to initial system research and commissioning leading to detailed engineering and installation, to ABB electrification and automation solutions, it plays a key role in maintaining the stability and continuity of the output of the Sangerchal terminal.
“We are pleased to announce that Per Erik Holsten, president of ABB’s energy industry division,” said Per Erik Holsten. “We are pleased to provide site-specific electrification and automation solutions to support BP’s efforts to decarbonise energy ecosystems in regions that have had a significant presence for over 25 years.”
Located 55km south of Baku, Sangachal Terminal has a daily capacity that processes 1.2 million barrels of oil and about 81 million cubic meters of gas. The ABB project, which began in February 2025, takes approximately 24 months to complete.
