ABB and Paragon work together to develop advanced instrumentation, control and electrification solutions for nuclear facilities.
July 3, 2025 – ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Paragon Energy Solutions, a US company specializing in developing integrated instrumentation, control and electrification solutions for the US nuclear industry. This collaboration explores the development of single vendor solutions that cover both critical and non-critical areas of nuclear facilities to support the operation of existing plants and the entire next-generation small modular reactor (SMR).
Under the MOU range, ABB can provide automated, electrified and digital solutions to the non-critical areas of nuclear power plants, including control room systems, balance balance and electrical auxiliary components of the ABB unit roll excitation system. ABB can also provide technology to support asset performance management and cybersecurity, increasing overall plant infrastructure and operational efficiency.
Paragon will focus on critical area systems within nuclear facilities. This includes important instrumentation and control solutions such as safety automation systems (such as reactor protection systems and system for engineered safety functions), neutron monitoring, i.e. breakers, switchgears, and motor control centers. Paragon also oversees the qualifications and dedication of the components to meet strict industry standards.
This collaboration is driven by a common commitment to meeting the growing energy demand in the US, particularly in energy-intensive sectors such as data centers and AI infrastructure. The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a $900 million funding initiative for SMRS as part of its efforts to advance nuclear energy technology. SMR is considered a solution for data center growth because it offers flexible deployment for compact sizes and modular designs.
“We’re committed to providing a range of services to our customers,” said Doug Vantassell, president and CEO of Paragon. “As demand for reliability and low-carbon energy grows, our partnership will help utilities modernize current nuclear infrastructure and support advanced nuclear reactors such as next-generation SMRS with highly integrated solutions.”
“The energy landscape is evolving rapidly, and with increasing demand, ABB supports all low-carbon energy sources, including nuclear power,” said Erik Holsten, president of ABB Energy Industries. “The opportunity to innovate and use technology is essential to success and is critical to supporting the safe and efficient operation of nuclear facilities. By partnering with Paragon, we can develop integrated solutions that increase plant performance and reliability.”
