Hackers have access to personal data about the majority of North American Allianz Life Insurance Company’s 1.4 million customers, the company confirmed Saturday.

Minneapolis-based Allianz Life, a Munich subsidiary of Germany-based Allianz SE, said the data breach occurred on July 16 when “malicious threat actors” gained access to third-party cloud-based systems used by the company.

“Threat actors were able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life customers, financial experts, and were able to use social engineering techniques to select Allianz Life employees,” Allianz Life said in a statement. “We took immediate action to contain and mitigate the issue and notified the FBI.”

The company said its own systems do not only access third-party platforms.

Allianz Life said the investigation was underway and the company began reaching out to affected individuals. He said the incident only includes Allianz’s life in the United States, not other Allianz business groups.

In the case of a data breaches, “social engineering techniques” are usually used to gain access using tricks. Spokesman Brett Weinberg said they could not provide details as they are still investigating.

Arians Life also reported violations against several other authorities, including the Maine Attorney General’s Office. The submission on the agency’s website said the company would discover the violation the day after it happened and provide 24 months of identity theft protection and credit monitoring of the affected 24 months.

Allianz Life was known as North American life and victims until 1979 when it was acquired by German conglomerate Allianz SE and changed its name to North American Allianz Life Insurance Company. According to its website, we have around 2,000 employees, and most of us work in Minnesota.

It is one of five North American subsidiaries of Allianz SE, a Munich-based global financial services group, and it says it serves more than 125 million customers worldwide.
