The NFU has welcomed new government plans to modernise livestock traceability — but warned that sticking to outdated tag technology risks missing a major opportunity for farming. The reforms, announced earlier this week by Defra, are due to take effect from summer 2026 and include a major overhaul of the cattle identification, registration and reporting process. Washington, DC, US – It was the 250th birthday of the United States Army, and the 79th of President Donald Trump. Tanks and other armoured military vehicles rumbled down the streets of Washington, DC, on Saturday, in what Trump had teased as an “unforgettable” event and critics had called a pricey tribute to the “egoist-in-chief”. Speaking after the hour-long procession, which cut through a balmy evening dotted with raindrops, Trump framed the spectacle as a long time coming. “Every other country celebrates their victories. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that directs the Federal Aviation Administration to lift the 52-year ban on supersonic flight over U.S. soil, marking a major policy shift that occurred just weeks after lawmakers introduced bipartisan legislation with the same aim. The order instructs the FAA to end the overland supersonic ban and create noise-based certification standards, allowing faster-than-sound travel as long as no audible sonic boom reaches the ground. “The reality is that Americans should be able to fly from New York to LA in under four hours,” Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House Office…

A group of farmers are trialling heritage poultry breeds in a move to cut carbon emissions, eliminate the routine culling of male chicks, and help producers survive soaring costs. The project, part of an Innovative Farmers field lab, brings together six farmers and a researcher to explore the potential of ‘dual-purpose’ chickens—traditional breeds suited for both egg and meat production. These birds could offer a sustainable alternative to modern specialist breeds, which are highly efficient but come with significant environmental and ethical costs.“For decades, poultry farming has bred birds for either egg or meat production, not both,” said Mike Mallett, an…
