Big Tech has won early in a legal battle with publishers

This week, two major AI companies recorded early victory in court, with federal judges siding meta and humanity in separate lawsuits about how the models were trained with copyrighted materials.

This decision represents the first practical legal test of AI companies’ argument that training models for books, images and other creative works can be viewed as “fair use.” It’s a big deal for companies building generative AI, and a potential turning point for many still moving litigation.

Today, TechCrunch’s equity podcast features Hosts Max Zeff and Anthony HA joined Sean O’Kane (Kirsten headed towards the Nevada Desert to see the next big act of Redwood Material. While neither case sets a precedent, Anthony noted that appeals are likely, saying the broader challenge could ultimately shape how AI companies interact with the industry as a whole in the future.
