ESPN has renewed media transactions with the Premier Racross League and has acquired stakes in the organization.
The five-year contract begins in the 2026 season and includes all PLL regular season games as well as All-Star, Playoffs and Championship games. This agreement is because Prolacrosse is profiting during broadcasting, partnerships and attendance. It will also be added to Los Angeles’ 2028 Olympics.
As part of the transaction, Disney– The owned ESPN said there is a minority shareholder interest in the league. Those familiar with the terms of terms of private details discussed under the terms of anonymity said the investment would give ESPN a 3% stake.
“ESPN is not only an expert on understanding sports fans, but also a great predictor of audiences and growth,” PLL co-founder and President Paul Laville told CNBC. “We are verifying that they have come to invest in what we are building, and as a partner, in addition to the growing coverage they give.”
Lavir said media dealings with ESPN are important for the growth of the sport. He said the network has been investing in lacrosse for about 30 years.
The partnership also appears to be rewarding ESPN. During the 2024 season, viewers at ABC for PLL’s championship game increased by 9% year-on-year. The league also had the most viewed All-Star game in history airing on ESPN.
PLL also sees growth in almost all of its metrics. Since 2019, paid tickets have increased by 34%, attendance has increased by 13%, ticket revenue has increased by 149%, and sponsored by more than 100%, Laville said.
The league is currently in its seventh season and has received financial support from Joe Tsai, Chernin Group, Arctos, Kraft Group, CAA and more.
Last year, PLL announced that it would start a women’s lacrosse league. This is the first season now.
