Farm telehandler stolen and used in cashpoint attack; police warn farmers

Farmers across the South West are being urged to step up security around their machines after a telehandler stolen from a Co-op store in Plimpton was used in a raid.

Devon and Cornwall Police released footage of the incident as part of their appeal, warning that the crime highlights how agricultural machinery is becoming a target for organized crime gangs.

The robbery occurred at around 1:45 a.m. on Monday, February 2, at the Co-op on Glen Road.

A John Deere telehandler stolen from the Smithayley area near Pidgeley’s Farm was used to crash into the wall of the store, allowing the thieves to remove two cash point machines and steal a large amount of cash.

Detectives say at least four people were involved and arrived in multiple stolen vehicles.

Constable Andrew Trott-Rogers said police believed the raid could be linked to other similar crimes across the country.

“After extensive investigation, we believe this incident may be related to several other robberies across the country over the past four months,” he said.

“We believe that this incident and the events we believe are related were carried out by a highly sophisticated organized criminal organization.”

Police said a telehandler and other vehicles used in the search were later abandoned, and several burnt-out vehicles were found in nearby woodland.

Authorities are urging farmers and local businesses to remain vigilant and review the safety of their equipment as thieves continue to target farm equipment used in serious crimes.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 on 50260027042 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
