India’s IT Giant Tata Consultant Services said on Sunday it will cut down around 2% of its global workforce, or about 12,000 jobs.

Software Services Firm (the largest market capitalization in India) will unfold within this year, with reductions affecting employees primarily in medium-term and senior roles.

TCS employs 613,000 people worldwide, and the IT services sector is one of India’s largest employers and revenue-income earners.

The company said the move is part of an effort to enter new markets and become an “future-ready” organization to expand the use of artificial intelligence.

“As part of this journey, we will release associates from organizations where deployments may be ineffective,” TCS said in a statement.

He said the restructuring was undertaken with “legitimate caution” to avoid disruption to client services.

After TCS’ June quarter revenue reached expectations, CEO K Krithivasan said this month that “global macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty has caused a demand shrinkage.”

IT services are the most visible part of India’s modern economy and historically one of the biggest white-collar jobs that drive the expansion of the middle class.

However, the slowdown in the sector has made hundreds of thousands of new graduates struggling to find work.
