The Iranian president says neither Qatar nor its people were targets for attacks on US bases in the gas-rich Gulf country.
Iranian President Masuud Pezeshkian expressed his “remorse” to Qatar’s Emil Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani on Monday regarding the Tehran missile attack on US bases.
In a call with Emir on Tuesday, Pezeshkian noted that neither Qatar nor its population was a target for the attack on Al Udeid Air Base, a US base in Qatar, and “represents a threat” to the Gulf state, Diwan (Emire’s office) said in a statement.
“[Pezeshkian] “The Qatar state remains a neighboring Muslim, sister state, and it expressed its hope that relations between the two countries will always be based on the principle of respecting the state and good neighbors,” the statement said.
According to an internal ministry official, Iran has fired 19 missiles at the largest US base in the Middle East. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said it launched this “strong and devastating missile attack” in response to a “blatant military attack” by the US on Iran’s nuclear facilities on Sunday.

Translation: His Highness has received a call from Dr. Masuud Pezeskian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
During the Iranian attack, a series of flares and large explosions were observed in Qatar’s capital Doha and other parts of the country. Qatar officials confirmed that the air base had been evacuated prior to the attack.
According to Diwan, the chief considered the attack “repeated strong Qatar condemnation” as a “serious violation of sovereignty and airspace.”
“His Prime Minister also expressed that this violation is completely inconsistent with the principles of good neighbours and the close relations between the two countries, especially as Qatar has always been a defender of dialogue with Iran and has made fierce diplomatic efforts in this regard,” the statement added.
Iran and Qatar have long enjoyed their brotherhood, and the Qatar government has denounced both Israeli and the US attacks against Iran. However, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jasim al Thani spoke about the “scars” of relations between Doha and Tehran at a press conference on Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council, denounced the IRGC’s “very dangerous escalation” and said the attacks had “subject to direct threats to regional peace and security.”
A fierce attack between the US and Iran takes place amidst the conflict between Israel and Iran that began on June 13 after Israeli forces struck multiple targets within Iran.
Hours after the attack on Al Udeid Air Force Base, US President Donald Trump announced late Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire. Nevertheless, both countries accused each other of violating their operations.
