“Nothing”: Inside the reverse transition away from the US | Migration News

The reversal is tough. According to the United Nations, more than 302,200 people tried to move north from South America last year alone.

But the transition north drips as President Donald Trump makes it nearly impossible to acquire in the US.

The Darien Gap – the pristine forest and the steep terrain sliver – were the main arteries connecting South America to the north. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people will struggle to cross the overpass on their way to the US.

There’s nothing more than this. The United Nations said only 2,831 people took the dangerous trek between January and March this year. This shows a 98% decline compared to the same period in 2024.

Yagua Parra made the journey herself, in her efforts to reach the United States. The International Migration Agency calls the world’s most deadly land route for migration north.

“The road was tough. A lot of things happened. Embedded, everything is everything,” Yagua Para said, distracting his younger traits. “People are hungry for it. It’s difficult. Something ugly happens.”

However, when he reached the border in the southern United States, he discovered one of the thousands who could not cross himself.

When he took office in January, President Trump cancelled the CBP One app. This is an online portal used to schedule appointments.

Anyone who crossed the border without documents was also prohibited from asylum protection.

Meanwhile, the US has increased its military presence at the border and further drives intersections.

The Trump administration touted these measures as contributing to a “historic low” for border unrest. However, immigrants who can’t cross have found themselves stuck in Mexico and are left behind in border areas plagued by human trafficking and exploitation.
