The crackdown on arrival of small boats, similar to the Eu-Turkiye deal, is due to increased pressure from the right, with high priorities.
British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have finalized a “one, one out” scheme to curb the intersection of refugees and migrants on small boats in the English Channel.
Leaders will see Britain deporting people to France at the end of Thursday’s summit in exchange for a similar number of people with strong asylum cases across the country and family ties.
The announcement concludes Macron’s three-day state visit to the UK, and aims to see the need for a “new deterrent” to crack down on undocumented migration as aid to the far-right anti-immigrant reform British party.
Policy similar to the scheme used by the European Union and Torkier puts a risk to Macron as he may question why his right-wing political critics agreed to reclaim refugees and migrants who wished to live in Britain.
Prior to Thursday’s summit, sitting next to Macron in his Downing Street office, prioritizing that the situation “can’t just continue.” “We are bringing a new level of intent to leverage new tactics, tackle illegal migration and break the business model of criminal gangs,” he said.
Macron said the two countries “shared the same resolve to fight illegal criminal gangs after strong coordination with other EU states.”
The scheme, which has led to “serious concerns” among several other European countries, could initially involve around 50 people a week, France’s Daily Le Monde reported. That number is tallied with 2,600 British media reports per year.
According to The Times, if the pilot scheme cites a UK government source to demonstrate a “proof of concept,” it will be expanded later.
Over 21,000 people have arrived on the small boat this year. This is a record number. On Wednesday, the Starmers Office told Macron that undocumented workers were increasingly arrested to stop them coming to England for work.
Macron’s visit was a major visit with King Charles and a ceremony that included a gorgeous state banquet and a procession of carriages to Windsor Castle, where French leaders discussed his British counterparts, including Gaza and Ukraine, and other troubling issues.
Leaders pledged to order more Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles than are currently used in Ukraine, and have signed an agreement to deepen nuclear cooperation.
Starmer and Macron will also dial on Thursday at a so-called “Willing’s Union” meeting in Ukraine, a group of countries that could deploy peacekeeping forces to the country.
