July 8, 2025 – Siemens Smart Infrastructure announced a collaboration agreement with Microsoft, transforming access to building Internet (IoT) data. This collaboration enables interoperability between building Microsoft Azure IoT operations enabled by Siemens’ digital building platform, Azure Arc. Azure IoT operations, a component of this adaptive cloud approach, provide tools and infrastructure that allow organizations to integrate data while connecting data, optimizing operations and leverage the possibilities of an IoT environment.
Interoperability of Building X and Azure IoT operations reduces integration efforts by up to 80%, resulting in optimized building operations and sustainability.
With the interoperability of Building X and Azure IoT operations, IoT-based data is more accessible to large business customers in commercial buildings, data centers and higher education facilities, providing the information they need to enhance sustainability and operations. Auto-onboarding and monitoring is possible by bringing data points such as temperature, pressure, indoor air quality to the clouds for assets such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, valves, actuators and more. The solution allows customers to develop their own internal use cases, such as energy monitoring and space optimization.
One-click devices onboarding into the cloud and efficient data exchange allow customers to design IoT architectures with unparalleled freedom. Siemens hardware and software components can be seamlessly integrated without being limited to a single vendor ecosystem.
It can leverage known and established open industry standards, describing the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web of Things (WOT), the Open Platform Communication Integration Architecture (OPC UA) for the Communication of Data to the Cloud. Siemens and Microsoft are both members of the W3C and OPC Foundation and develop standards and guidelines that help you build your industry based on accessibility, interoperability, privacy and security.
This solution marks one of the first integrations of purely IoT data based on open standards between providers.
“This collaboration with Microsoft reflects our common vision of allowing customers to leverage the full potential of IoT through open standards and interoperability,” said Susanne Seitz, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings. “Improved data access allows portfolio managers to provide granular visibility into key metrics such as energy efficiency and consumption. With IoT data often siloed, this level of transparency is a game changer for industries looking to optimize building operations and achieve sustainability goals.”
“Siemens shares Microsoft’s focus on interoperability and open IoT standards. This collaboration is a key step forward in making IoT data more practical.” “Microsoft’s strategy highlights our commitment to partner with industry leaders, allowing our customers to have more choice and control over IoT solutions.”
Interoperability between Siemens Building X and Azure IoT operations will be available in the market from late 2025.
Building X is a digital building platform that helps customers digitalize, manage and optimize their construction business, paving the way for sustainable, autonomous and profitable assets. It is part of Siemens Xcelerator, an open digital business platform that enables customers to accelerate digital conversions easier, faster and at scale.
