San Francisco, August 4, 2025 (Globe Newswire) – A new analysis by the Brattle Group shows that the fleet of home batteries at Sunrun’s (Nasdaq: Run) California is the biggest contributor to the historic decentralized power plant dispatch event, which provided an average of 535 megawatts.
Sunran is a partner of the California Energy Committee, California Independent Systems Operators and aggregators for multiple distributed power plants, the largest discharged home batteries, in conjunction with the California Energy Committee, California Independent Systems Operators and local utilities during the scheduled testing event on Tuesday, July 29th. The goal of the event was to prepare for the expected needs-based dispatch amidst the heat of August and September.
The Brattle Group has found that output from over 100,000 residential batteries typically results in a “visible reduction in net load” across the grid across the statewide grid, when the output is most valuable to the system.
Ryan Freddick, principal of the Brattle Group, said: “Events like this show system operators that residential batteries provide large, reliable, planned grade performance.”
“Residential batteries, and other sources of distributed flexibility, can provide Caiso net peaks, reducing the need to invest in new generation capabilities and reducing the burden on systems associated with the evening load lamp,” says Hledik.
Sunrun’s home battery provided more than two-thirds of the total energy dispatched during the event (over 360 megawatts in two hours, with the ability to provide this critical energy every day. Sunrun batteries acted in the same way as traditional power plants, decisively beating the peak demand for the state’s evenings.
“This customer-driven solution is beneficial for both households and grids,” said Sunlan CEO Mary Powell. “Distributed home batteries are a powerful and flexible resource that ensures power to the grid immediately to protect all households by preventing blackouts, mitigating peak demand and reducing extreme price surges.”
This is the second time Sunran’s home battery fleet has helped reduce California’s peak energy demand this summer. On June 24, Sunrun’s statewide power plants dispatched 325 megawatts of peak power from 7 to 9 p.m.
