Ukraine’s military says it has attacked a Russian oil refinery near the capital Moscow, a day after Russia launched a major and deadly offensive against Kiev.
Ukraine’s military announced on social media on Saturday that it had attacked an oil refinery in the Ryazan region “as part of efforts to reduce the enemy’s ability to attack with missiles and bombs.”

A Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital on Friday targeted homes and other locations, killing at least six people and wounding nearly 30 more.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the attack as an “evil attack” and said the Russian attack used around 430 drones and 18 missiles, including ballistic and airballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s attack on the Ryazan refinery comes as the two countries have exchanged attacks on energy infrastructure as they seek to gain the upper hand in the nearly four-year conflict, especially ahead of another bitter winter of war.
Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-owned power transmission system operator, announced last week that most parts of the country would be without power as it works to repair infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks.
Drone attack, frontline combat
Separately on Saturday, Ryazan Governor Pavel Markov said Russian air defense forces shot down 25 Ukrainian drones over the region during the night.
“Falling debris caused a fire on the premises of a company,” Markov said on Telegram, adding that there were no casualties.
Russia’s RIA news agency also reported that the situation remained stable at Russia’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine after one external power line was shut down.
The power plant announced the previous day that the Dneprovskaya transmission line, which supplies power to the plant, had been cut off as a result of an automatic protection device tripping.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces faced difficult fighting in the southern Zaporizhzhya region this week.
Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw from five villages after heavy fighting with Russian forces in the area.
President Zelenskiy said in a video posted on social media on Thursday that he spent the day on the front lines in Zaporizhzhia, meeting with military and other military leaders.
“The Russians want to do everything to make life in Ukraine unbearable,” he said. “We are doing everything to ensure the protection of the state and all Ukrainians.”
