“Superman” surged to theaters this weekend, launching a new era of DC Superhero Flicks, selling domestic tickets for an estimated $122 million.
The film marks the first theatrical debut of James Gunn and Peter Saffron since they became co-head of Warner Bros Discoveries DC comic films and TV units for the second half of 2022. The pair developed a decade-long plan to reinvigorate studio franchises across television and films, including fresh spins of Superman and Batman.
“D.C.’s path to success has been extensive over the years, and now under the auspices of James Gunn and Peter Saffron, the impressive opening weekend performance of ‘Superman’ allows DC Studios to hit resets with the film and chart new courses.
“Superman” domestic operations ranked as the best performance of any Superman film of all time, surpassing 2013’s “Superman: Man of Steel,” earning $116 million in its first three days in theatre.
In the first three days when “Batman v. Superman” opened at $166 million, DC only had four performances in its first three days.
“Superman has fulfilled its promise as another welcome hit for the summer box office roster, but it also serves as an effective launch pad for the new era of James Gunn’s DC studio,” says Sean Robbins, director of analysis for Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory.
Internationally, Superman generated $95 million on ticket sales, bringing an estimated Global Open to $217 million.
