“We’re AI,” acknowledges the popular indie rock band.

It has been named "Velvet Sunset"AI-generated bands have won millions of listeners on Spotify

The AI-generated band, dubbed “Velvet Sundown,” has gained millions of listeners on Spotify.

With over a million monthly listeners on Spotify, the indie rock band has become an AI-generated music project after days of speculation about whether the group is authentic or not.

The name Velvet Sundown created a ferocious online discussion after being able to nod to Lou Reed’s band The Velvet Underground, which became a viral hit and won listings of hundreds of thousands.

An updated Spotify profile consulted by AFP on Tuesday confirmed the group was a “ongoing artistic provocation.”

“All characters, stories, music, voice and lyrics are original works generated with the support of artificial intelligence tools employed as creative instruments,” added Velvet Sundown’s profile.

Recently created social media profiles featured photographs of groups that looked suspiciously fake, teasing readers about the group’s origins and often providing conflicting information.

Experts have long been warning about the dangers of AI images, video and music generators that blur the line between real and fakes.

A major December study by the Social Coalition of Authors and Composers (CISAC), representing more than 5 million creators around the world, warned of the dangers of AI-generated music.

As the AI-constructed music market grows, artists predict that they will be able to see their income shrink by more than 20% over the next four years.

Stockholm-based streamer Spotify declined to comment directly on the velvet sunset when contacted by AFP.

Spokeswoman Geraldine Igou wrote that the platform “does not prioritize or benefit financially from music created using AI tools.”

“All trucks are created, owned and uploaded by licensed third parties,” Igou claimed.

Rival Music Streaming Service Deather has issued a warning for Velvet Sundown’s “AI-generated Content.”

“Some tracks on this album may have been created using artificial intelligence,” it said.

Spotify’s rivals include AI music detection tools that can identify songs generated using popular software models such as Suno and Udio.

Deezer said in April that it receives over 20,000 fully AI-generated tracks daily, consisting of 18% of all uploaded content.

A report on Tuesday said a fraudster pretending to be Secretary of State Marco Rubio was using high-level officials and foreign ministers using voice and text messages generated by AI.
