The Global Quality Assurance Provider DNV completes test observations of the remote operation capabilities of the ABB Capability System 800XA.

June 24, 2025 – The remote operational capabilities of the ABB Capacity System 800XA Distributed Control System (DCS) received a professional opinion statement from DNV, a global quality assurance and risk management company that helps set industry standards and ensure compliance with regulations and best practices.
Tests witnessed by DNV confirm that the system design of DCS, a digital platform for automated control and operation of facilities at the heart of the process and energy industry, can handle network problems and capabilities within the acceptable boundaries of low-bandwidth and high-latency networks in offshore and remote land areas such as wind and solar agriculture. This provides investment trust that is essential to expanding renewable energy sources as part of the energy transition.
DNV independently witnessed the operation of the System 800XA at a dedicated test site designed to represent realistic plant topologies, reflecting cybersecurity best practices and simulating the various network challenges that fiber optic, mobile technology and satellite communications can experience in remote environments. This process used a network emulator to control and decompose conditions and tested several operations, including switching from onshore to offshore control room, encryption of communication between two sites, and transferring control.
“ABB’s System 800XA is a key offering that enables industry slimmer and cleaner outruns, playing a key role in supporting low carbon and renewable energy production in harsher environments and remote locations.” “Our role at ABB is to promote technological advancements by collaborating with solutions that give industry confidence in safety and reliability in the safety of people and energy supply, as well as investment.”
Remote unmanned facilities use is growing across the energy environment as businesses seek to increase safety, provide increased efficiency and leverage expertise from a global talent pool. Renewables are expected to meet half of global electricity demand by the end of the decade, and technological advances will enable production in an increasingly challenging environment. The reliability of connections to centrally located control systems, often located hundreds of miles from the production facility, is essential for successful sector expansion.
“The energy transition relies on the greater use of digital assets for remote operations. As these technologies become more and more networked and connected, energy operators and their supply chains need to ensure that digital operations meet the growing expectations of cybersecurity and network resilience.” “The ABB System 800XA can handle network problems and work within the acceptable boundaries of low-bandwidth and high-latency networks.”
The ABB Capacity System 800XA has over 12,000 installed systems in over 100 countries, monitoring and managing over 50 million tags. This is part of the DCS suite that has led ABB to become a global market leader for the 25th consecutive year.
