Krispy Cream and McDonald’s They are ending their partnership forever.
The chain will suspend donut sales at McDonald’s restaurants on July 2, the company said in a press release Tuesday. Alyssa Buetikofer, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald’s USA, said the collaboration is on track for the burger chain and its franchisees, but “it needs to be a useful business model for Krispy Kreme as well.”
Their contract placed Krispy Kreme Donuts at the location of 2,400 McDonalds. The company suspended its partnership in May after sales slowed, and Krispy Kreme withdrew its year-round financial outlook due to economic “softness.” The chain has scrapped the deal last year after announcing plans to roll out Krispy Kreme Donuts at the McDonald’s location by 2026.
“In the end, our efforts to bring our costs together with the unit’s demand have failed, and the partnership has become unsustainable for us,” Krispy Kreme CEO Josh Charlesworth said in a statement Tuesday.
Krispy Kreme said it will focus on expansion through “distribution points of large quantities of retail points” and growth in international franchises. The company also said the deal represents only a “small, material” part of McDonald’s breakfast business.
McDonald’s stock fell slightly on Tuesday, while Krispy Kreme stock rose more than 1%.
McDonald’s has tried to lure consumers through deals as sales have slowed as diners cut their restaurant spending. In the first quarter, the chain recorded its biggest drop in sales for the same storey since 2020.
Krispy Kreme shares plummeted around 73% this year. In the first quarter, the company announced a loss of approximately $33 million.
