Openai drops scale AI as data provider following meta trading

Openai has phased out its work with Scale AI following its meta deal with startups and cut ties with data providers, an Openai spokesperson told Bloomberg Wednesday.

Openai’s Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar previously proposed that the company continue working with Scale AI. Now it seems Openai has changed its tone.

Openai said it had invested billions of dollars in startups last week’s announcement of Meta, and introduced CEO Alexandr Wang last week. An Openai spokesperson told Bloomberg that Openai was looking for other providers for more specialized data to develop increasingly sophisticated AI models.

Openai’s decision to reduce Ties raises questions about the core data labeling business for scale AI. Last week, Reuters reported that Google was also discussing plans to remove AI as a data provider.

Just as rumors have swirled over Meta’s contract with Wang, some of the AI competitors said they have received an influx of interest from AI model providers looking for a “neutral” partner.

In a blog post published Wednesday, Scale AI’s legal advisor tried to crush the idea that Meta would receive priority treatment following the contract. Scale AI executives said they would not share sensitive information from other customers with META, and Wang said he would not be involved in daily operations.

Despite these claims, it appears that Scale AI’s biggest customers are already separated from data providers. In other words, startups may have no choice but to change their business.

In another blog post released Wednesday, Jason Droege, interim CEO of Scale AI, said the company will “double” its application business, including building custom AI applications for governments and businesses.
